How The WORST Console Launch EVER Happened

Sega's launch of the Saturn console was unprecedented, weird, and messy. Let's take a trip down memory lane.

I had the option to get a game console one year (pretty sure it was 1996). My first choice was the Saturn because I was really into Virtua Fighter, but my parents bought me a SNES instead. It mostly had to do with price because we were poor and Best Buy was selling the SNES was like $99 because the N64 has either launched or was about to launch. But if I remember correctly my parents were also told the Saturn wasn’t a good choice because it wasn’t doing that well. My parents didn’t want to get an expensive console with a limited library that would fizzle out in a year—which is exactly what happened. Even though the SNES was essentially obsolete when I got it, I could still get games for it and our video store had games to rent for it (they did it have Saturn games). Plus it’s THE reason I got into Zelda and got a Triforce tattoo that plays into the story of how I met my husband. So not getting a Saturn kind of worked out in the end.

Never bought one even though I had both the Genesis and Nomad. Sega was doing some confusing stuff around that time with their releases. Ended up getting a PS1 later instead.

I remember my Dad coming back in christmas with a Sega Saturn, altough it was the most expensive one, he bought it with around 8 games, because he knew I love the arcade sega games. Thanks Dad! That christmas of 95 was awesome!

I remember getting the Saturn and thinking it was revolutionary... Of course I later started playing more and more on my brother’s PlayStation which ended up being our “workhorse” console.

If I remember right, my cousin had one. He also had the add-ons for the Genesis when they came out. He was a bit spoiled XD
