Some extra info regarding the animation references: Not only does Soras stance change to that of Valor Form’s when he’s holding an item, his idle animation changes too, as he quickly bobs from left to right the same way you do when in Valor Form in KH2. Also, when he does a dash attack while holding a sword item, the animation as the same as when he uses Fire in Master Form (also from KH2). Furthermore, when holding a sword item, his forward smash animation changes to Zantetsuken. Lastly, and this is a little obvious, but Sora’s dash animation is his glide animation from across the games, though it seems to mostly resemble KH1. As for some of the spirit fights, Krystal showing up in Aqua’s fight is a reference to Aqua’s signature command style: Spellweaver, which has a lot of ice attacks. And for Axel, the fight taking place on Kalos Pokémon League with only the fire Pokémon showing up as a reference to his KH2 fight where he covers the entire arena in fire.

As a huge fan of Kingdom Hearts 2, that Roxas Spirit battle was AMAZING! It was a great reference to his battle with Roxas in The World That Never Was.

Something cool a lot of people seem to miss is that the raft and paopu fruit that replace Donald and Goofy are actually from young Sora’s dive to the heart in birth by sleep

The Axel spirit fight is referencing the boss battle against him when you play as Roxas in the beginning of KH2, in the basement of the mansion in the simulated Twilight Town. The stage is very clever because the first part in blue represents the cold atmosphere of the basement itself, and the second part with the fire references the battle, as Axel surrounds the battlefield with flames. Really clever details!

I would imagine that Kirby’s use of an ethereal Keyblade is just Disney’s orders. Keep in mind that Kirby can wield the Falchion (which only Marth and his descendants can do) and safely wield the Monado (something I’m pretty sure only Shulk can do in Xenoblade, though I’m not far enough into the game to know why).
