Firearms Expert Reacts To Battlefield 1’s Guns

Jonathan Ferguson, a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries, breaks down the weaponry of Battlefield 1, including the tiny Kolibri pistol, the Borchardt C-93 semi-automatic pistol, and the Villar Perosa M1915 automatic firearm.
Battlefield 1 takes the long-running shooter franchise into the First World War, and as a result, it includes a range of period weaponry such as the M1915 Hellriegel machine gun, the Bergman MP18 submachine gun, and the Burton 1917 light machine rifle.
In the above video, Jonathan Ferguson--a weapons expert and Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries--breaks down the guns of Battlefield 1 and compares them to their real-world counterparts.

The developer are actually very aware that the game is not really genuine WWI. One of them says in a video that this is their vision of what the war could have looked like. In the game menu you can actually read about each gun and like he says in this video, a lot were experimental and/or super rare. Great video! I’m just a gamer but this game has really helped introducing me to some really cool history

The MP18 bayonet looks like it’s something that might’ve been made in the field by some semi-skilled craftsman, its just clamped onto the barrel jacket and tightened with a wingnut, so not based on any real examples but it’s certainly not out of the realm of plausibility

"This thing would have...zero stopping power." People with five hundred Kolibri service stars: "Reality can be whatever I want."

I like that very last gun that was showcased. "Sir, how do we increase our firepower!" "Simple. Two guns." "At once?" "Yes."

I love that this guy says things like, “it definitely didn’t exist in this time,” or, “There were only prototypes of this and they were just after the war.” He understands why they’re in the game and doesn’t scoff at the historical inaccuracy and realizes the need for variety in weapons.

Battlefield 1 is amazing to play when they host the “back to basics” gamemode which strips out all of the automatic firearms, we’re talking 32v32 of Gewehr 98s and SMLEs, at times it feels like a firing barage from Napoleonic times. It requires teamwork to win and is incredibly fun
